Ice Rivers

Ice Rivers

The journey to Piedra Rojas in winter is difficult and impossible without a sturdy 4x4, or the gusto of a Paraguayan truck driver. At nearly 5000m altitude, the air is thin, and the cars find it difficult to get enough oxygen to burn the fuel.
The reward is a spectacular series of ice rivers that form on the salt lakes, with various species of Andean water fowl basking in the relative safety from predators, with only an occasional solitary Rhea or Vicuna pack passing by.

Vicuña Procession

Vicuña Procession

Arriving in Piedras Rojas and a short hike from the mud track, I came stumbled upon a small group of vicuña, a native camelid and ancestor of the Alpaca, walking past me. These docile creatures are known for having the warmest fur in the world, and there are laws protecting them from being harvested.

Melt

Melt

Not far from San Pedro de Atacama, a Sand dune creeps across the land, intending to ultimately take the land from the people living there. Adobe from previous generations litter the landscape, the bones of buildings and walls long since gone reclaimed by the changing landscape that is the Atacama.
