At approximately 4000m altitude in the cold winter of the Andes, Piedras Rojas is not an easy place to visit. Here these saline lakes molten in the summer months, become a winter habitat for the Andean geese. Vicuña a protected camelid species a close relative of the Alpaca is said to have the warmest fur of any species also call this area home, and roam throughout the area.
